Thursday DVD Review ~ Some hits and One Big Miss

Mental note to self read what the movie is about before renting. I saw the cast and just jumped on it. I DIDN'T read what it was about! My fault, I'm no prude by far but this was just not my type of movie, I love a movie that I just can laugh at and forget what's going on my life. This was on a total mishit for me, not my cup of tea, I'll pass :).

After marrying her high school sweetheart (Paul Rudd), Priscilla Chase (Parker Posey) created the perfect life for herself. But she seems to have left something out: her orgasm. Now, with her husband off exploring his manhood by trying to get in bed with a college coed (Mischa Barton), Priscilla devotes herself to the study of masturbation. Danny DeVito and Liza Minnelli round out an all-star ensemble cast.

By now you know the boys obsession with IMAX which is cool with me because they always have the best movies that are always educational. This was a short one but Cole LOVED it and watched it a few times. Plus Michael Douglas rocks as a narrator.

Michael Douglas narrates this spectacular IMAX exploration that follows some of the top paleontologists in the world on a journey across the globe and back in time to learn about where and how dinosaurs lived. The quest takes viewers deep into the Gobi Desert and to the buttes of New Mexico for some remarkable new scientific finds, including the discovery of what might be the oldest dinosaur unearthed in North America.

Oh yes Wow Wow Wubbzy is a HUGE hit in our house, I always try to rent the newest one. It always has a great message behind the episodes and the boys always sing along and love it.

Kids will get hours of wow-worthy fun from this collection of friendship-themed episodes adapted from the Emmy-winning animated series "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!" and featuring the square-shaped Wubbzy and his colorful friends, Widget and Walden. There's singing and dancing, of course. But there's also plenty of learning as Wubbzy and his friends work together to find a lost Wiggle Wrench, build a Super Robot and dodge a Doodleberry Cake.

I'm sorry ladies I know some of you liked this movie so I rented it but I just couldn't get in it. Jeff Bridges did an amazing job at playing the role and from what I hear it was spot on. The thing is I'm not a big country fan and I think that would totally help my out look on it. It was a sad tale that showed you alcoholism up close.

When reporter Jean Craddock (Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal) interviews Bad Blake (Oscar winner Jeff Bridges) -- an alcoholic, seen-better-days country music legend -- they connect, and the hard-living crooner sees a possible saving grace in a life with Jean and her young son. But can he leave behind an existence playing in the shadow of Tommy (Colin Farrell), the upstart kid he once mentored? Robert Duvall produces and co-stars.

Instant Download: As you know my boys LOVE dinosaurs, I found this on the download and just knew it would be a hit. It was a GREAT mix with current times and back in time. He travels back and shows you dinosaurs. It was great to watch and very educational also!

Thrill-seeking zoologist Nigel Marven teleports back in time to track down the owner of "The Giant Claw." Then, in "Land of the Giants," it's on to prehistoric South America, where Nigel has front-row seats at a battle between history's largest predator and its gigantic prey. In "Sea Monsters," Nigel confronts sea scorpions, giant squid, huge armored fish and a very hungry (and testy) 60-foot Mosasaur.

It's summer time and it's raining non stop so Wii & Netflix instant download is my friend. This is one of my favorite books as a child that was turned into a movie a few times I believe. This was a great one and of course had an all star cast. The boys loved it.

When young orphan James spills a magic bag of crocodile tongues, he finds himself in possession of the world's biggest peach -- a massive fruit that rolls, floats and flies him away to strange and distant lands. But that's not half as odd as the inhabitants James finds living inside its juicy flesh: a talking centipede (Richard Dreyfuss), a ladybug (Jane Leeves) and a spider (Susan Sarandon) who want to help the boy escape his wicked aunts.

Instant Download: As you know we love IMAX movies and anything with the sea or the sea creatures. Cole just loved this one it was a great movie with brilliant colors and wonderful creatures!

Narrated by Ed Harris, this scientific journey takes advantage of a cutting-edge lighting technology that allows viewers to travel 12,000 feet below the ocean's surface into an exciting and rarely explored area of hydrothermal volcanoes. This perpetually erupting rift known as the Azores reveals an ecosystem of almost alien sea creatures that thrive in pitch darkness, extreme pressure and boiling temperatures.

Instant Download: I love Lauren Graham and she always makes me laugh and Jeff Daniels is usually great also. But sorry this was one I wouldn't watch again, I could barely sit and watch it. It was just odd.

Reclusive author Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels) -- who's intentionally been out of the spotlight since he penned an inspirational self-help book two decades ago -- finds himself in need of spiritual healing in this quirky indie romance. Though everyone still looks to Arlen for answers, he's an emotional cipher without a clue … until he meets an angst-ridden, overprotective single mom (Lauren Graham) and a recovering alcoholic (Lou Taylor Pucci).

Instant Download: Brittany Murphy was always so cute I loved her movies they were not always the highest rated but you just had to laugh. Some of it was in subtitles so you have to pay attention. It really was a cute movie that you'll just fall in love with her.

When her boyfriend leaves her high and dry in Tokyo, spoiled American tourist Abby (Brittany Murphy) finds solace in a neighborhood ramen noodle house run by a cantankerous old chef (Toshiyuki Nishida), who agrees to take her on as an apprentice cook. But will the dirty grunt work and endless criticism drive Abby away before she discovers the serene beauty in the perfect bowl of soup -- and in herself? Robert Allan Ackerman directs this comedy.
Hope you find one or two

  2. Yes, definitely read the descriptions! How much of the Ohio movie did you watch before you realized what it was about?

  3. My son would probably get into the Dinosaur ones and James and the Giant Peach. We just got Netflix for Wii (which I'm loving! Plus it saves so much $$) so I'll suggest those one of these afternoons when he's complaining about summer boredom! ;0)

  11. Heck I haven't heard of many of these. I liked Crazy Heart because I love Jeff Bridges but it was slow and I'm not into country. I couldn't understand much of what he was saying. Thanks for the reviews.

  13. Can't say I've heard of any of these listed, but the IMAX ones look like films the whole family would enjoy watching.
