Minion Cupcakes (Modeling Chocolate Toppers) for Birthday Dreams Charity

Here's another post I'm behind on posting. These cupcakes I made a few months back. I signed up for for a Minion themed party for Birthday Dreams (bringing birthday's to homeless kids). I did a little searching on Google and found some minion faces and I went to decorating. Some modeling chocolate and bam cupcake toppers!

What you Need:
Modeling Chocolate in yellow, purple and black (See Recipe at the bottom)
Circle Cookie Cuter
Square Cookie Cuter (formed into straps for eyes)
Candy Eyes
Black Food Marker
Frosted Cupcakes

I had modeling chocolate in several different colors made up before from previous projects. I took yellow and purple and cut out circles. For the faces I cut out black for the straps of the eyes. I added candy eyes to the faces, for the circles around the eyes I added circles around they eyes. For the yellow faces I took some silver dust and went around the eyes. Purple I left purple around the eyes. I took the black food marker to draw on hair and mouths. I then put the toppers on top of frosted cupcakes.

Modeling Chocolate
12oz Candy Melts
1/4 Cup light corn Syrup

Melt your Candy Melts in microwave (mine takes about 2 minutes). Stir them to become smooth and add the corn syrup.  It will become thick and form a ball.  Wrap in plastic wrap and let it sit out and dry.  Takes a few hours or over night is best. (Alexis note: I found to roll this out use a little powder sugar (like you would do with flour), also you have to kneed it a little like you would dough to make it easy to roll out).

Minion Cupcakes for Charity (Made from Royal icing Minion Cookies)

Next on the list for Birthday Dreams charity cupcakes was a request for a special 2 year old that wanted Minions. Now I've done the Minions out of modeling chocolates (see this post here, photo below). So this time since I'm getting more comfortable with royal icing, I thought I would make minions out of sugar cookies.

What you Need:
Sugar Cookies cut into circles (see my fav sugar cookie recipe below)
Royal Icing in Yellow, Red, Blue & Black (recipe below)
AmeriColor Gel Food Coloring Yellow, Black and Silver (to dye Icing)
Pipping Bag
Black Edible Marker

Tint your Royal Icing to the perfect shade of yellow. I use the dipping method with my royal icing. I started to do this about 6 months ago to speed up my decorating time. You can pipe each cookie which is a little cleaner but I find the dipping method to be the best. You get your royal icing to the outline consistency and put into a pie dish (I find this is not too deep). Once you dip the top of the cookie you tap off the extra icing and then you let dry! Once dry you can add your details. I like to do my cookies the night before to give plenty of time for the icing to harden. I took a plastic piping bag and added the details with White, Silver and Black royal icing. I have found in the past making this a little thicker than your outlining consistency is best if not they run together and you get a cyclops (which kids think are cool but not the look I was going for).  NOW this time I was rushed and didn't let the cookies dry long enough, making the eyes should have been done in steps and let dry. SINCE I was rushing I didn't let it and my eyes turned out a little wonky. ALSO the ONLY silver coloring I found was in airbrush coloring which made the royal icing a little too thin. So next time I will do better, that is always my goal. ALSO I ran out of black AmeriColor and had to run to Michael's which ONLY carries Wilton in a NON squeezable bottle. I so hate these bottles the squeeze bottles are the easiest and LESS messy!!

INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS:
1.In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
2.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
3.Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

Julie Usher, she has a GREAT YouTube video on how to make, color and make consistency adjustments

Royal Icing what you need:
2 lbs Powdered Sugar
1/2 tsp Cream of Tartar
5 Large Egg Whites (or equivalent)
Flavor to Taste
Gel Icing Color

Mix powder sugar and cream of tartar in your mixer, just to make sure it is incorporated in. Slowly add egg whites, then whip start of slow then go to very high speed. She says around 2 minutes, my friend had an older mixer so it took almost 10 minutes. You want stiff peaks that hold on and won't fall off the spoon. Add in your flavor, I would suggest you use a clear flavoring.  This would be the glue texture great for ginger bread houses etc.

Take 1 cup of royal icing in a smaller bowl then add your coloring, lightly mix so you don't get air into the the icing. I'm like her and like the gel coloring.

For Top Coating - Add 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 tsp Water (This is if you don't want to outline and flood)
For Outlining - Add 1/2 to 3/4 tsp Water
For Flooding  - Add 2 to 3 tsp Water

WATCH her video on How to Top-Coat, Outline, and Flood Cookies. YES it is around 7 minutes BUT if you have never done this technique it's a MUST she explains it perfectly.

Despicable Me Birthday ... Squid Launcher's & Welcome Sign

And as promised we are finishing up our Despicable Me Party.  These last two items were so simple but pulled the party together.

Despicable Me Birthday ... Box of Shame

This was the EASIEST thing of the party I made.  YUP the highlight of the party is the one thing that took me about 2 minutes to MAKE!  NOW finding the box was the hardest part!  I went on search a large box like a stove or something but no luck and none of my friends had one they could give to me either. 1 day (YES ONE DAY) before the party I stopped at Cash and Carry and saw this box for cups and asked if I could have it and they were like sure! Phew God love them!

What you Need:
Box (Garment Size would be best, Mine was too short)
Razor Blade
Sharpie

Take a razor blade (or scissor) and cut a hole for the face to show.  Then take your sharpie and write Box of Shame!  BAM done!

Despicable Me Birthday ... Minion Bucket

I promise this is the last week of the party goodies!  LOL I just had so many things I made that I had to break them up in all these post .. I know I just can't help myself.

Next on my list is a Minion Bucket that I made, after the party I carefully cleaned it out and now it hold toys and lego's in Caden's room.  I found this idea on Hoyby Crafts, her's was done in felt.  I did mine with heavy card stock using my Cricut (Personal Electronic Cutting Machine) and my George and Basic Shapes Cartridge.

What you Need:
Yellow Bucket (found at Dollar Tree)
Googly Eyes
Heavy Card Stock - Black, White, Grey and Red

I cut the circles for the eyes (Large Grey, Medium White and Small Black).  I cut a large strip of black to make the eye strap.  I cut a moon for the mouth in black.  Ovals in white for the teeth, cut them in half to make teeth. Red round oval turned sideways for the tongue.  Black rectangles for the hair.  I then took my hot glue gun to glue all the pieces onto the bucket.

Despicable Me Birthday ... Snack Bar (Food Ideas & Printable Food Tents

HOLD ON IT'S A LONG POST WITH LOT'S OF IDEAS .. LOL.

Next on the todo list was the food!  I had to do a fun sign "Caden's Snack Bar" and served the food in dog bowls like Gru served candy and water to the girls in the first movie.  I found the ideas of the snack bar sign and the shrunken moons on One Lucky Pickle, she has some great ideas for a Despicable me party check it out!

Here is how I did the sign:
I made ovals for the minions (cutting off the bottom and sides)
Circles for the eyes and added a google eye
I made a "I" for the eye strip
And made his name in 2 colors to make it pop
Glue it all on with your craft glue.
Board found at the dollar tree.

Close up of the Sign:

For the food I found these simple Food Tents on Family Shopping Bag.  I took her template pasted into word doc and added some fun food names using the Minion font I downloaded.

Despicable Me Birthday ... Perler Beads

We are still are on the Despicable Me party train!  I have a few more things to show you.  I loved the Perler Beads I made for Cole's Minecraft party so I went on the search for ideas to do for Caden's Despicable Me party.  I found several websites, DeviantART had a bunch of ideas.  We kind of just tweaked what we saw and made it work.  I have no templates for you, just click on the picture and you can count how many you need (this was the easiest way to figure it out .. at least that is what I found).

Here are a few of my favs

What you Need:

Perler Beads (found at Hobby store, Black are HARD to find Amazon carries)
Perler Bead Board / Paper
Hot Iron

Make your design, CAREFULLY put the paper on top (almost like a wax paper) and put your HOT iron ontop.  BECAREFUL not to leave on too long or it will become mushy. I found that I just pressed down and iron like I would a shirt.  Once that side is done flip over take off the board put the paper on the backside that is now facing up and do it all over again.  Let them cool and they are ready to go.  I did a one figure per bag just like this and then I made another one that I made into a necklace.

Here is a How To Do:
 Before and Afters
(click on picture as your guide to how to do)

Here's some of the Characters I did:
The Minions
Gru and the Girls (one is missing from this picture)
