It's a Cake Thing ... Owl Diaper Cake

My coworker was having a baby girl and I wanted to make her a gift, since she lives on the other side of the US I wanted to find a diaper cake I could ship easily.  I saw several ideas for an Owl Cake on Pinterest.  I found a great video on Thom's Craft and good step by step on Book Worm Cook.

  • 36 Diapers (New Born size used in the example)
  • 1 Roll of Ribbon (1-inch Wide, )
  • 1 Roll of Ribbon (1/4 Inch wide)
  • 2 Cloth Flowers
  • 1 baby Wash Cloth
  • 1 Pair of Baby Socks
  • 1 Baby Bib
  • 1 Receiving Blanket
  • 2 pipe cleaners
  • Some Rubber Bands
  • Scissors
  • Tape
1. Make the body by packing the diapers in a circular shape (around 25 to 30 diapers used). I used my large cake pan. Pack as tightly as possible. Secure with a rubber band.
2. Make two smaller circles for the eyes, securing with rubber band (around 6 diapers used).
3. Wrap a wide ribbon around the body to cover the elastic, use tape to secure.
4. Cover the body with the bib. Fold a washcloth in a triangular shape and tuck into the space between the eyes for the beak (I used an extra pair of socks I had).
5. Fold the receiving blanket to the width of the diapers. Use it to cover the top of the owl’s head. The ends should drape down for the wings.
6. Tie the smaller ribbon around the neck (under the bib).7. Tuck socks under the bias tape on the owl’s head for ears.
7. Take a pipe cleaner fold in half, insert a sock.  Tuck the ends of the pipe cleaner into the top of the diapers for the eyebrows.
8. Cut the wire off the flowers to be long enough to stick into the middle of one of the small roll of diapers (the eyes).

Hope you all had a great weekend and Thanked a Military person.

Diaper Cakes Featured

I love when something I have worked on gets a nod and a feature on one of the blog hops.  I makes me super giddy!  I've been so busy with kids stuff I haven't been able to post my newest feature.  I was so excited to get a feature for my Palm Tree Diaper Diaper Cake on Freedom Fridays with All My Bloggy Friends #18.  A big thank you to them for taking the time to do this weekly and featuring me.

Have a GREAT weekend.

Bring on the Diaper Cakes ... Palm Tree Diaper Cake

Next on the diaper cake train was the one I made for the Safari themed party.  I thought it would be fun to do a palm tree with a monkey hanging off it.  I saw a few different ideas on Diaper Cakes Tampa and More than Favors.  I took their ideas and ran with it.

I did my normal diaper cake base that I would do for a 3 tier diaper cake.  I rolled each diaper and tied it with ribbon that says "It's a boy" found at the dollar tree.  I made one round of diapers to resemble a base (like a round cake).  Tied it with a brown ribbon that reminded me of safari themed.  I usually am so good at taking step by step pictures but this time I was up until midnight the night before the party and my mind was not on picture taking.

What you Need:
Diapers (around 50 per cake)
Wire Ribbon (to wrap around the base)
thin Ribbon (to wrap around each individual diaper)
Wire Palm Branch
Monkey (with long arms and long legs)

To roll a diaper I start at the fold of the diaper and roll into a tight roll (almost like a cinnamon roll).  I tie mine off with ribbon from dollar tree that say "It's a boy (or girl)". You could use a clear small rubber band if you want.  Put together around 45/50 rolled diapers in a circle and tie with the wire ribbon this will make your base of the palm tree.  I took 3 rolled diapers and pushed them up the wire of the palm branch (this will cover up the wire stem).  I found a monkey that had the long arms and legs that I wrapped around one of the tree's.

Bring on the Diaper Cakes ... Diaper Cake Tub

When I went to visit with my coworkers last October they had a surprise baby-shower planned for one of our VP's.  I of course wanted to make something, and my brilliant plan was to make a diaper cake.  YUP I packed all the supplies into my suitcase, which caused me to go over the 50lb weight limit, thank God I got a nice lady who didn't charge me for the overage.

My amazing boss stayed up with me the night before the shower and helped me create this awesome cake I found on Building it on Pennies.  It was rather easy to make an extra set of hands does help when putting the ribbon on.

Diapers (Used around 40)
1-baby bath tub
1-baby bath gel
1-baby powder
1-baby lotion
2-teething rings (if possible red and blue)
2-baby wash cloths
1-Sm rubber ducky that takes the waters temperature
1-lg rubber ducky that covers the tub's water spout
1-Wire Flower (easy to bend to shape into spout)
 2" wired ribbon

Place diapers over the edge of the tub and snugged them up nice and tight.  Pull ribbon around and tie a tight knot with a pretty bow to hold all the diapers in place (we had to do a little tape to help hold the ribbon down).  For the water spout for this tub. I first roll some diapers and stuff in the tub to hold the spout in place. Wrap 5 diapers around a flower stem to create the spout.  Put ribbons around the rolled up diapers to hold them on.  Then put the tub's spout in between the other rolled up diapers.  Bent it over to look like a water spout, added the teething rings to represent faucets (red and blue would be perfect) and then add a couple of wash cloths over the edge of the tub. Placed extra diapers in the bottom of the tub to fill it up.  For the bubbles use some poly foam.  Float the duckies on top like they would in a bath tub.  Add extras like the lotion etc to the tub and present to the mom to be.

It was super cute but it will be perfect gift for a new or soon to be new mommy!

Mom 2 Be Gifts (Diaper Cake & Cookie Mix)

At our family reunion I had the chance to meet up with one of my dear cousin's who is on baby #3 (this time a BOY).  Oh yeah she is coming into my world of boy!  I don't get to see her very often and wanted to surprise her with a little gift.  I went on the search threw Pinterest of course for some good ideas!!

First off I have made this Bakeralla Recipe for Cowgirl Cookie mix in a jar.  I saw on Life in Wonderland this awesome idea to add a nipple at top to make the jar look like a bottle (I know how fun).  Now I was doing one for a boy so I just switched it up for the colors.  NOW remember when you put in the sugar, put the brown sugar FIRST then top with sugar.  IF not you will do like I did the sugar goes down over the candy pieces.

Cowgirl Cookies
1 1/3 cup all purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup & leveled
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup cooking oats
3/4 cup m&ms
3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup white sugar
1/3 – 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Stir all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 slightly beaten egg. 1/2 cup butter (melted slightly in the microwave). 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Use the back of a large spoon to work it all together. You may even need to use your hands to get everything incorporated. Then roll the cookie dough into 1 1/2 inch balls, place on a parchment covered baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven.
LEX NOTES:  For the jar add in the DRY ingredients with a NOTE to add the other ingredients.  I couldn't find M&M's so I used york pieces (the only Blue candy I could find).  I skipped the chocolate part and just used all the pieces.  I also skipped the pecans.

Next on the list was to make a diaper cake.  I didn't want to do the usual one that I do, so I went on the search and found this really cute Stork's Bundle.  It was on the Cricut website.   I couldn't find the cricut cut I needed (yes I called around to all stores around me and no luck).  So I hit up Google Images and found this Image.  I printed it on card stock, cut out the stork and added a little piece of blue card stock behind it to make it pop.  Now there wasn't directions on how to make this diaper cake so I winged it.
Here is what I did:
Took 15 Diapers rolled them individually and wrapped with a rubber band.  I folded the receiving blanket to make the bundle look.  I made a pyramid of diapers and pulled up the sides of the blanket.  I held the top with a rubber band to secure it and then added ribbon and tied a bow.  I then cut a hole in the little stork I made and tied it on with a little ribbon.  (SEE the step by step pictures below for any questions or you can send me a note :)).

I hope you try one of these they are so easy to make and I thought it was a great personal touch to give to any mom to be!

Hello 36, bringing it in with fun!

I had the most amazing weekend full of amazing friends and so much love!  Friday my Tuesday dinner friend was so sweet and planned a dinner for me.  She made a great dinner and a HOMEMADE cheesecake!  For those who know me know that is my favorite dessert, just a little bite for me but it was DEVINE!  And a big surprise she invited my best friend from when I was 9.  It was a great surprise and we had  a great time laughing and enjoying a wonderful night.

Blogger Pics2

Saturday was a great day too!  I got up and worked my shift.  Then off we went running, we had Sylvan for Cole.  While he was studying Caden and I hit Target to make a diaper cake for babyshower.  One of my dearest friends from grade school was having another baby 2 boys and a now a girl!!  It was so amazing to see all the friends from school.  It was so much fun laughing and enjoying each other!  I sadly had to run and couldn’t stay long my dad was watching the boys and I was given 1 1/2 hr window.

Blogger Pics

I ran to pick up the boys and spend a little time with my parents before I headed home.  My amazing bosses called and surprised me with a gift card for dinner!  Since I had no luck on finding a babysitter for the night we took the boys with us to our favorite fancy usually date night no kid restaurant.  We splurged and had a wonderful bill and when the bill came and I opened it up to see over $100 I almost fell off the booth, thank God the GC more then covered it.  I have never had a bill over $60 … lol.

I even started with a bloody Mary, I never order a drink when we go out for the cost (unless with my parents and dad is paying … lol).  We even got a appetizer of clam strips.  The boys and Rick have never had them and were surprised they liked them.  Rick of course got clam chowder.

Blogger Pics3

Then for dinner Rick had Steak, Caden had pasta, Cole had grilled cheese and I splurged and got a smoke salmon fettuccini (that was to die for).

Blogger Pics4

When even had DESSERT, that is a NO NO when ever we go out.  All 3 boys had hot fudge sundaes and I had a burnt cream.

Blogger Pics5

It was a full packed day and I think we finally got home around 11pm!  Then Sunday was back to the busy go go!  Off to the 9am Church Service.  And quick to home to do a few things and then we headed up to my parents house to wish my dad Happy Father’s Day.  The boys helped me put together a BBQ basket for Rick.  Sadly he had to work the whole weekend but it was nice we were able to carve out a little time together.

Blogger Pics1

Thank you for all the amazing friends!  The cards and gifts were so thoughtful and just made my day.  I am truly blessed to have such great people in my life!

Vroom Vroom Biker Diaper Cake?

IMG_5223
I had a friend from high school as me to make a diaper cake for her. I saw this one on Pinterest and have been dying to make it. It turned out very cute. It is on the spendy side to make, I went to Target and found the items and I didn’t find generic version so it was all the name brand items. PLUS most of the items come in a pack of 3 or 4 when you need 2 so you have left overs. So the cake with the extra’s did cost me $75, which was the budget given so I didn’t get paid to make it … lol. Next time I will plan better but it was a fun item to make and I’m sure if I hit Walmart I could find the items for less.
The site I found the Motorcycle Cake on has a great STEP BY STEP tutorial. I did document step by step in my photos. This was so much easier to make then the normal cake I make where I have to individual diaper wrapped taking me around 3 hours and then another 2 to make the cake. This took me around 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours to make and my little helper Caden had fun helping. At first I was a little frustrated with it but then I got the hang of it, so don’t give up! Click picture to enlarge.
Materials: 34 diapers Pampers Swaddlers Size 1 (17 for each tire), 8" cake pan, 2 rubber bands, 2 receiving blankets, 2 bibs, 1 chain link toy, a pair of socks or mittens, a baby bottle, 1 washcloth, scissors, pins, a stuffed animal, and decorative ribbon.
I made mine a little larger so I used 1 1/2 packs of diapers and 2 chain link toys.
Blogger Pics1
Take half your diapers and fan out in a cake pan to fill the circle. Make sure the gab between each diaper is even. With one hand on top of the diaper, use the other hand to start pulling each diaper to the right until they all are even. Take a rubber band and wrap around your round that will become a tire. Wrap each tire with ribbon of your choice. Place a pin to secure ribbon. The pin will at be the bottom of the tire. Do the same for the other tire. Fold first receiving blanket in half...and roll it up. If you want you can secure the end of the rolled up blanket with a pin just until you place the blanket through the tire opening. Pull both ends of the blanket (following the arrows) to make sure the 2 tires are tight and the blanket too. Not too tight but firm. This will hold your entire motorcycle! Place a pin in the inside of the tire opening securing the 2 blankets against the diapers. Make sure the pin is all the way in! then tuck in the remaining of the 2 ends of the blanket in the opining of the tire. Put a bib on the front tire to look like a fender. Roll up 2nd blank put threw first tire to make handle bars. Pull up to have both ends even and put one or two link toys to secure. Put the bottle in the middle before you push tinker toys down, this will secure and look like a light. You can use a piece of card board in the ends to make them secure. Put tissue paper inside the sock or mittens to fluff them up before you put on the ends of the handle bars. Put the second bib on the back tire for the back finder. Top with a toy of your choice to be your rider.

WWW ~ Kids Clinic, Playdates & Thanksgiving!

Wowzer time is just flying by and you add in the holidays and it seems like it is harder and harder to fit everything in. Does the early nights with the sunset make anyone else feel like your day is passing you by??? Gosh I am sick AGAIN, I swear these little germ carriers I call kids keep making me sick and it stays FOREVER!! I've missed a few Wednesday Weekend Wrap ups so I merged them all together for a quick overview :). Yup I'm always thinking about you ... hehe yes I know my life is so not the do or die but it's still fun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've had a few Lowe's Kids Clinics. Ok if you haven't done one get your butt up on every other Saturday, you go it's free and the kids have fun!! Here is a few we've done in the last few weeks!
We've had a few playdates and a fun Birthday party at a gymnastic place. The boys and I have been having some fun, staying in from the cold outside!
Second I had a baby shower to go to. Usually I make a huge diaper cake that takes me like 6+ hours I whipped up one real quick in about 4 1/2 hours. OK so I get there a girl takes the cake I warn her it is not stable. About 10 min later Cole comes running up and whispers in my ear mom they are putting your cake in a bag. OH no she didn't I go down to the gifts to find them shoving (YES shoving) my cake not even into a gift bag but a brown bag! I walk over and they are like oh it fell apart we're just putting it in a bag. YOU got to be kidding me 4 1/2 HOURS of work and you're not even going to come get me to fix it! They go oh do you want to fix it, I snap you THINK I only spent 5 hours on it (I gave myself a 1/2 hr ... lol). Finally someone did come help but say the least I was a unhappy camper! So sadly not my prettiest cake and a little worse for the ware but hey it was thought that counts I guess.
Thanksgiving brought us a dinner at church with all our friends there on Sunday. Tuesday brought us a snowstorm of no school for the week! And Thursday came for family coming over! Ok so I have a friend that I offered to come over she said she had no $ for dinner. Then it became her mom & son. THEN Thursday AM she called to say her brother was coming also?? Ok she kicked this person out for drugs. I'm sorry I feel like I'm being taken advantage of, also my family doesn't care for this person I initially invited so I was already sticking my neck out. So I told her sorry this isn't going to work. She was going to go with me BF shopping since I didn't have anyone to go with. She then says I have a $1000 & I'm going with my family. So she was going to bring the whole fam here for dinner and do a dine and dash! Yup the doormat is rolled in, no more welcomed! Then I was blessed my mom said she was surprising me & taking the boys over night!! This is the FIRST time both boys have spent the night, and Cole's like 6 time staying there. THEN Rick surprised me and said he was going to go with me!! He even had to work the next AM. YUP so all works out in the end. I learned a valuable lesson and actually had a good family dinner. Only a few comments when I wasn't in the room about Cole and being hyper and how another grandkid would NEVER be like that :). The favorites are always the favorite but no matter what Cole did a pretty good job!
Few that is the world we've been having, some highs and lows but over all so much fun and no matter what anyone says my boys I'll take you hyper with all the hugs and kisses and I love yous :).
I Present to You Twin Diaper Cakes
Well yesterday was just not one of my favorite days, I was sick and just felt horrible. I'm glad I was able to apologize and hopefully move forward and not look back. Even though I wanted to go crawl into bed and pull the covered over my head. For some reason these little people that kept calling me mom wanted dinner. I guess no pity party for me, it was time to move on and forget. I threw together a yummy dinner and recruited my best friend from Elementary School (yup Elementary School!), just wait she's going to hate me next week's FFF photo for Junior high is some great pics of us in our tap and jazz unitards (yup we were so cute and tards ... LOL). Back to my story, I was in dire need of help to put some diaper cakes together, my mom aka bow maker bummed out on me (dad's sick and didn't want company). So Ms. Tarra had to come over and put two diaper cakes together. Hey the hard work was done I wrapped each diaper the night before I was up to almost midnight. You ask why, because yes I'm a tard and put this off to the last moment and my friend (aka bosses daughter) needs two cakes for her BFF who is having twin girls! So here it goes two diaper cakes in a pink, brown and pale green. Sorry girl's I was going to write more but I'm needing a little time. LOL don't worry I've really moved on.
My BFF (wow 24 years) Tarra! Look at the fun you have when you come to my house.
I give you bow duty!
(Semi)Wordless Wednesday - Diaper Cake Addition
Well as semi-wordless as this Chatty Cathy can be ... Oh shhh it's hard for me! It's like the way I cook "Semi-Homemade", as mom's apron says "Put on your Big Girl Panties and Deal with it".
Well today I had it scheduled for some funny video's of the boys dancing, well what you can expect from two white boys that Dad thinks a box step is dancing. Well long story short (see I told you I just can't) computer was having problems last night and I couldn't log on so I'm going with a picture I have here on my computer at work. Oh stop gasping I'm on a break, you know the state makes you take 2 of them a day! Geez stop being so hard on me! Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today? Hmmm maybe since I'm having this conversation in my head as I type, maybe I did? Nope it's NEVER me, it has to be the people in the wall. I'm sticking with that! Oh sorry back to wordless ... LOL.
So here's my crafty side, with help from mom she worked in a florist years ago and can rock a bow like no one's business! I've become known for my diaper cakes and actually have sold a few for people! Yup look at me go, really didn't make much but hey who cares $1 an hour is fare wage right? Ok back to the point ... Here is one of my diaper cakes! If you must know (heavy sigh insert)! I roll each diaper (count them 101 usually) individually with a ribbon that says "It's a Girl", "It's a Boy" or "Congratulations". I've done 3 tiers and up to 5 tier cakes, each tier is tied with matching ribbon (this is where mom comes into play). Usually a theme so the ribbon and animals match! And scattered on each level is items that match the "theme". Don't ask I'm crazy with theme's, you have a party for a kid with a theme and I go crazy finding a toy, a gift bag and card (which I always forget and is added to the collection in my junk drawer) with that theme. Yes I know I have a "touch" of OCD, oh shhh I say a touch and that's where I draw the "themed" line ... LOL
Sorry got a little wordy, I just can't help myself! With out to many more words, since it's Super bowl Sunday I thought I'd show off my Football theme Diaper Cake. I made this for one of Rick's bosses (don't even ask the boy has had a lot of different jobs).
