Emoji Themed Party ... Perler Beads

And last on the Emoji themed birthday party is the Perler Beads made. The boys and I have loved doing perler beads for all the parties. We will make characters and then put them in the party bags for the kids. I just talked to a mom from Caden's school who told me they still have the minion we made from a few parties back (yes I almost cried someone kept them).

What you Need:
Perler Beads (Colors needed for the character etc)
Perler Board
Perler Paper (like a wax paper)
Hot Iron

I always google first Perler Beads and the theme I'm working on. I then print them out and use as my guide to make. I use a medium board and map out what I'm making. We put two Emoji character's in each party favor box that each kid got to take home. This time I bought clips at Hobby Lobby to make them key chains for the kids to hang on backpacks etc.

Once you get the design you like, you put the perler paper on top. I have got it down when I set the iron on top of the paper I set a timer on my phone for 90 seconds. If I do longer it melts too much and the board gets messed up. I have found that you can warp the board if you heat it up too much. I make so many of these each party that I have to by new boards each time. Thankfully they are not too expensive.

Here is a step by step if you have not done a perler bead before:

  1. Working on a flat surface, create your design by placing beads one by one on a Perler peg board.
  2. Preheat a dry household iron to the medium setting. When carrying the bead design to the iron, be careful not to tip or bump the beads from the peg board! Cover the beads with the ironing paper. Keeping the iron level, gently iron the beads in a circular motion for about 10 seconds** to fuse the beads evenly. When ironed properly, the beads will still have an open center. If you are working on a 3-D project, DO NOT OVER-IRON the beads as it will make the centers of the beads close and can make assembly more challenging.
  3. Once the design is cool, peel off the ironing paper. Lift your design from the peg board and flip the design over onto your ironing surface. Cover it with the ironing paper and iron the other side to fuse it evenly. Your peg board and ironing paper are reusable.

Party Planning for Emoji Themed

With upcoming business trips and birthdays I'm trying to be ahead of the game and get some things done early. I head to Boston again June 16 (MY 40TH .. yes I'll be in the air on my bday). I return June 23rd and have Caden's party on June 25th! I'm trying to do things that can be made a head of time so I'm ready for the big day and not crushed when I fly back. Caden picked the theme of Emoji, so we sat together and went to Pinterest and pinned a bunch of ideas. We started working on perler bead designs for the treat bags.

Here is what we've done so far:

TMNT Perler Beads

As you know I'm a little obsessed with themed parties and of course on this quest of themed parties I came across perler beads! I have done it now for the last few parties, they take a LOT of time to make them but I just love them! Thankfully my boys could be a little OCD like me and at times they will sit and make these for me for the party goers. I did a google search and found SEVERAL ideas on different ways to do the TMNT Characters, the logo and food. I just googled and then blew up the photos. The boys and I then counted the rows and made our designs. Sorry no real step by step to make these, I would suggest doing like I did printing the picture and then copying on your perler board.

What you Need:
Perler Beads (Colors needed for the character etc)
Perler Board
Perler Paper (like a wax paper)
Hot Iron

I use a medium board and map out what I'm making. This time I made a few different heads (4 characters), Pizza and TMNT logo. I did find a sewer lid also but it was too large for the board I had. We put one character and a logo or pizza in each pizza box favor that each kid got to take home.

This is how I do it I print out and then plan out my boards.
The boys like it this way to they can see the picture and duplicate.

Pokemon Party .. Pokemon Character and Ball Perler Beads

And we end the party! The last thing on the Pokemon Party is the Perler Beads shaped like Pokemon Characters and Balls.  I did a search on Google and Pinterest and found several different shapes then we got to it. My youngest is so much like me and can do these tedious activities. We had 20 treat bags to do and we want 2 per bag so we made 40 of these!  My oldest thankfully did all the ball ones for the party.

What you need:
Perler Beads (Hobby Lobby or Michael's - In the colors you need)
Perler Bead Board
Hot Iron
Perler Bead Paper
Designs (Google or Pinterest)

We printed all the different balls and characters. We then copied the design onto a board, we used it like a math game and counted how many up and down. Once your design is done you take the perler bead paper and put on top and you put the hot iron on. We found out that 60 seconds left on then press the corners and make sure everything is connected. Once cool you flip off the board put the paper on the back side and repeat with the iron. They are done after that, you can make a necklace or just leave them like we did.

I was able to get pictures of my youngest making them.
My oldest did it late at night without picutres.

Despicable Me Birthday ... Perler Beads

We are still are on the Despicable Me party train!  I have a few more things to show you.  I loved the Perler Beads I made for Cole's Minecraft party so I went on the search for ideas to do for Caden's Despicable Me party.  I found several websites, DeviantART had a bunch of ideas.  We kind of just tweaked what we saw and made it work.  I have no templates for you, just click on the picture and you can count how many you need (this was the easiest way to figure it out .. at least that is what I found).

Here are a few of my favs

What you Need:

Perler Beads (found at Hobby store, Black are HARD to find Amazon carries)
Perler Bead Board / Paper
Hot Iron

Make your design, CAREFULLY put the paper on top (almost like a wax paper) and put your HOT iron ontop.  BECAREFUL not to leave on too long or it will become mushy. I found that I just pressed down and iron like I would a shirt.  Once that side is done flip over take off the board put the paper on the backside that is now facing up and do it all over again.  Let them cool and they are ready to go.  I did a one figure per bag just like this and then I made another one that I made into a necklace.

Minecraft Party ... Minecraft Perler Bead Characters

Yesterday I posted about the Minecraft Party I was doing for Cole's 10th Birthday.  Block invitations for the party have been made.  Today I will show you the fun Characters the boys and I made for the goody bags.  I saw several ideas on Pinterest but they all linked to Etsy websites selling them.  My bright idea was I can make these, Kitchen Magpie showed on her blog that they were easy to make so I can do it.

WELL let me tell you this is time consuming, and those little beads don't always like to stay on the peg board. ALSO when ironing don't zoom across the board you will knock the beads off and have to start all over!  It was aggravating at times, but then my OCD kicked in and I couldn't stop making them.  I'm planning for 24 kids to be on the safe side and wanted 2 of these per bag so we needed 48 total made.

Here are two of the main characters:

What you Need:
Perler Beads (Found at Hobby Lobby)
Perler Bead Square Board (Found at Michael's)
Perler Bead Iron Paper (came with Board)
Hot Iron

I googled Minecraft perler bead templates and printed them out.  I bought the big bucket of beads thinking it would be easy to sort.  WRONG, next time I do this I will buy the one color per bag version of Amazon. We each took a character and started to work.  Little fingers are helpful when doing this project.  BE-CAREFUL when you put the iron on the paper, if you leave for too long it will become mush and gooey.

Here's a few of my favorites we made:

How to make:

Make your design on the board, we did 10x10 squares (10 beads high by 10 beads wide). Cover with the ironing paper, with a hot iron press down.  I let mine sit on top for 30 seconds then with the iron tip went around the edges.  When you are sure it's all connected flip it over, take the plastic board off and top with iron paper and iron the backside.  Let cool and they are ready to go.  I'll add some necklace string to them, I'll update this post later when I do that.

Here is the before and After's of a few:

UPDATE:
Here is me making them into necklaces
